Carnelian is a variety of Chalcedony, which is a part of the Quartz family. It comes in rich shades of yellow, orange, red and brown. It can also vary from semi-opaque to highly translucent.

The name Carnelian is derived from the Latin word ‘carneus’, which means ‘flesh’. This is in reference to the colour of the stone.
