Black Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass. It forms when molten lava cools quickly, giving this stone a smooth, glossy shine.
Different cultures throughout history have used Black Obsidian to shape weapons, including arrowheads. This stone was also used hundreds of thousands of years ago, in prehistoric times, in the fabrication of tools.
The word ‘Obsidian’ essentially means ‘the stone of Obsidius’. It was named after the Roman gentleman who is said to have discovered it in Ethiopia. There is some confusion, however, as to whether his name was ‘Obsius’ or ’Obsidius’.
