Lepidolite is a lilac, grey or pink coloured member of the mica family. It has a really high content of lithium. It is a relatively rare crystal. In order to form, lava needs to cool at a very slow rate with the presence of water vapour.
The name Lepidolite is derived from the Greek word ‘lepidos’ which means ‘scale’, because of its scaly appearance caused by flakes of lithium.
The suffix ‘ite’ is derived from the Greek word ‘ites’ which is the adjective form of ‘lithos’ meaning ‘rock’ or ‘stone’. Therefore Lepidolite literally translates to ‘scale stone’.
